Is it actually possible for structures to be on the moon?

Sujoy Das

The moon would be a great place to build structures. First, of course, you’d have to sign some peace treaty with the moon women.

All of the usual laws of physics that govern structural engineering on Earth would apply equally on the Moon.

Foundations would be spread footings on rock or piles socketed into rock. Perfect-o. That’s our favourite, zero uncertainty.

There are no external lateral loads from wind.

There is no weather or rain to make the structural components corrode.

Gravity is only 1/6 of Earth so that the structure would be very very light.

There are going to be seismic loads from moon-quakes but that’s no big deal, just design for the applied load like you would do on Earth since the structure is so light, the building mass is going to be small, and the seismic loads will be low.

For energy, you can use a substantial solar panel array.
